The Auburn Speedster is an American automobile manufactured by the Auburn Automobile Company in Auburn, Indiana, and assembled in Union City, Indiana. Between 1928 and 1936, a total of 887 vehicles were built in three series (1928-1930 with "8" and "Big Eight" engines, 1931-1933 with 8-cylinder engines, 1932-1934 with 12-cylinder engines, and 1935-36 with the spectacular and iconic Supercharged 8). By 1924, Auburn's production had dropped to six cars a day. Errett Lobban Cord, a successful car salesman, took over the ailing company and commissioned James Crawford to design and develop a new series of vehicles. Other companies had already produced cars with "boattail" styling (Peerless, Packard, Hudson), but Auburn wanted to establish a leading image in this segment. The Speedster featured a fixed windshield, but no side windows, no interior door release, an optional roof, a cockpit for only two people, and an aerodynamic body. The last year of production was 1937, as Auburn ceased automobile production entirely in 1937.
