Designed by Joji Nagashima, technically based on the E36 and internally designated the E36/7, this was the first new BMW to be built exclusively in the USA. Within two years, a new factory was built in Greer, South Carolina, which began producing the E36 in 1994. For the Z3, all components, with the exception of the engine and transmission, came from North American suppliers. The roadster was extremely popular from day one, certainly thanks in part to its clever placement in the 1995 James Bond film GoldenEye. A coupe version (E36/8) was added in 1999. This was somewhat controversial—it was more of a shooting brake than a true coupe—and quickly earned the nickname "Sneaker." The engine lineup ranged from the 1.8-liter four-cylinder with 85 kW (116 hp) to the mighty 3.2-liter six-cylinder in the Z3 M, which delivered 239 kW (325 hp). The 2000 model year saw a facelift, best recognized by the L-shaped taillights. The facelift also included improved soft-top insulation, now with three layers instead of one, and a higher-quality plastic rear window. A total of 279,273 roadsters and 17,815 coupes were produced in seven years. __________________________________________________ PLEASE NOTE: for this vehicle the surcharge totals 10% of the hammer price.
