The first generation of the Corvette, as introduced in 1953, was Chevrolet's answer to Porsche and Jaguar: a compact roadster, lightweight thanks to its plastic body and, from 1956 with the V8, also sporty. In 1963, the second generation was presented, marketed under the name Corvette Sting Ray. It featured a significantly improved chassis with independent rear suspension and disc brakes. But above all, there was a striking new, exciting design. Pop-up headlights were introduced – and became a hallmark of the Corvette until the release of the sixth generation in 2005. With its eyes closed, the Corvette had a sharply angular front end that contrasted with elegant, flowing lines – like a stingray. The third generation appeared in 1968, featuring a significantly more muscular appearance while retaining most of the C2's engine and chassis components. This didn't prevent it from becoming the longest-produced generation of Corvettes, with production lasting no less than 14 years. In terms of engine configuration, there were essentially two groups: based on either the small block (around 5 liters) or the large block (up to 7.4 liters, discontinued in 1975), with various transmission and gear ratio variations.
