Mercedes-Benz presented its new SL of the R129 series at the 1989 Geneva Motor Show. The predecessor had been on the market for a proud 18 years, so the target audience was ready for the new car and embraced it enthusiastically. Early buyers had to accept a wait of several years. Bruno Sacco's aerodynamic, wedge-shaped lines won the International Car Design Award. Technologically, the new SL was very advanced, especially with regard to its safety features. These included a sensor-controlled automatic roll bar that deployed in 0.3 seconds when needed, as well as integral seats. The convertible top was no longer manually operated as in the R107, but electrohydraulically, opening and closing within 30 seconds. The aluminum hardtop was about 10 kg lighter than that of the previous model. The R129 was available with a variety of engines, ranging from 2.8 liters to 7.3 liters in the rare AMG V12 models. After 12 years and two facelifts (1995 and 1998), a total of 204,940 units had left the production halls, most of them with V8 engines.
